The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) declared on the sixteenth of June that it has started enforcing a new regulation prohibiting the utilization of famous figures in gambling promotions.

The KSA stated that it will closely observe the implementation of the prohibition and take immediate actions against any transgressions.

Celebrity endorsements refer to those who have attained a degree of notoriety, such as fashion models, social media influencers, or soccer players.

Since the commencement of the Netherlands’ regulated online gambling market last October, there has been ongoing debate surrounding online gambling advertisements throughout the nation.

In January, the KSA indicated it would take a firm stance on advertising, and in February, the KSA issued cautions to operators after the regulator found evidence that three operators intended to advertise through platforms primarily used by children and young adults.

In March, Dutch Minister for Legal Protection, Franc Weverling, mentioned the celebrity endorsement ban as a promise to develop more stringent advertising laws.

Just days after the new rules came into effect, KSA chairman Rene Jansen questioned whether the gambling industry could self-regulate.
